What are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are small, twisted blood vessels that are visible through the skin.
Spider veins are like varicose veins, but smaller. They may be red, purple, or blue and most often appear on the legs or face. They take their name from their striking spiderweb pattern. They may cover a small or large area.

Common causes:

  • Heredity
  • Occupations that involve a lot of standing, such as nurseshair stylists, teachers, and factory workers
  • Obesity
  • Hormonal influences of pregnancy, puberty and menopause
  • The use of birth control pills
  • Postmenopausal hormonal replacement
  • A history of blood clots

Other reported causes include trauma or injury to the skin, previous vein surgery, and exposure to ultraviolet rays.
